Windows Dial-Up Networking Guide
This page is designed to give you
information and troubleshooting tips on the Windows 95/98 Dial-up Networking (DUN), which is what you
use to connect to NCKCN. You can set modem parameters, TCP/IP settings, and authentication
parameters to name a few, simply by right-clicking the DUN connection you wish to
view/edit. Follow these simple tips to set the way your modem works with DUN.
- To get to DUN, simply double-click My
Computer on your desktop
- Then you will see the Dial-up Networking
icon as shown. Simply double-click the Dial-up Networking icon to see the
connections.
- Now you can see your DUN connections. Simply
right-click on the appropriate connections and select properties to view/edit this
connection as shown.
Depending on your version of Windows 95, or
Windows 98, the General tab allows you to set the local access phone number for your
connection, select which modem you want to use for this connection, as well as view/edit
the configuration of that modem.
- Set your local access number by simply typing in
the correct access number you receive from NCKCN.

- The General tab on the modem
properties allows you to select the Com port to use for the selected modem, speaker
options, and modem speed as shown.
- The Connection tab allows you to
set the way your modem talks to the NCKCN system. You will probably not have to change
anything on this tab.
- The Options tab allows allows you
to have a Terminal window display before or after dialing. NCKCN doesn't use this older
way of connecting to our system, simply make sure neither is selected as shown.
To set the protocols and how you connect up to
NCKCN follow these steps.
- To set Server Types to connect to NCKCN, first
select the Sever Types tab as shown. (If you have Windows 95 version A,
it has a Server Type...button which allows you to access what is shown).
You will want to have your settings configured as shown. Select the TCP/IP
Settings button to view/edit TCP/IP settings for this connection.

- You will want to have your settings as shown (Be
sure to read your personal information sheet for any different settings). You
want Server assigned IP address as well as Server assigned name server addresses selected.
Also make sure the Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network
options are set. Click OK to continue.
To change your username or password, simply
follow these steps.
- Simply double click on the NCKCN Connection you
are using to bring up the "Connect to" dialog box.
- This is where you can change your User Name and
Password simply by typing in the proper information. Important: Most things are case
sensitive and have to be exact with compters and on the Internet. If your username
is "jsmith", then type "jsmith", not "Jsmith",
or "JSmith", or "JSMITH", or " j
smith"
or " jsmith
" , or anything except "jsmith". Your connection will not work
properly if you type it in incorrectly. Your username and password have to be exactly as
it is given to you. Make sure you don't have extra characters, or spaces or anything
except your username and password. (Only asterisks will be displayed to prevent someone
from looking over your shoulder to get your password) Note: your username is not your
email address which is in the form: username@nckcn.com.
- You can also check the "Save Password"
check box if you want Windows 95/98 to save your password so you don't have to type it in
again every time you want to connect. (If your "Save Password option is not
available click here
to see how to update your Windows system to have the "Client for Microsoft
Networks" component to make this option available)
- After you connect to NCKCN, you can view your
connection speed by placing the mouse cursor on the Active Dial-up Connection icon in the
Taskbar try as shown. A pop-up display will indicate your connection speed in bits per
second.
That's it, you are ready to access your dial-in
account.
- After you are finished with your connection, you
can use the above Taskbar icon to disconnect your connect also. Simply double-click on the
Taskbar icon to bring up the connection box, then click on the Disconnect button as shown.
