This guide is written with
the assumption that you already know how to operate your computer,
and that you already know the basic terms used in this guide to
describe operating your computer. NCKCN does not provide basic
computer support as we do not sell computers or computer software.
You must go through the Help and On-line guides on your computer
first to learn how to operate your computer. There are also local
businesses that provide basic computer support as well as classes
from local schools that might provide this basic training.
This guide will take you
step-by-step through configuring Mac OS X and Mail to connect to the
Internet for the first time. There is no software to install from the
NCKCN CD-ROM, you already have Microsoft Internet Explorer, the
latest software available, in Mac OS X. Simply follow the
instructions to connect to NCKCN and the Internet.

Mail Configuration Instructions
Configuring System
Preferences
- Select "System
Preferences..." from the Apple Menu Item
Or
- Open "System Preferences" from the dock
- Open the "Internet" Control Panel
- Click on the Email tab to access your email settings
- Choose "Mail" as the Default Email Reader
- Type your email address exactly as it was given to you
by NCKCN
- Enter the Incoming Mail Server: pop3.nckcn.com
- Type in your username. This is the first part of your email
address
- Carefully type in your password exactly as it was given
to you by NCKCN. Your password is case-sensitive
- Enter the Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.nckcn.com
- Click on the "Web" tab to enter your preferred settings for
your web browser
- Choose "Internet Explorer" for the Default Web Browser
- You are free to choose any Home Page you wish. We recommend
http://www.nckcn.com
- You are free to choose any Search Page you wish. Google is a
good one.
- Select the option "Show All" in the upper left hand corner of
the window
- Select the "Network" control panel
- Make sure that the "Using PPP" option is chosen next to
Configure:
- You will not need to enter any other information under this
tab. Everything will be supplied by our severs once you
connect
- Click on the "PPP" tab
- Type NCKCN in the "Service Provider" field
- Enter your local access number in the "Telephone Number"
field. This is the number provided to you by NCKCN to connect to
our servers. It is NOT YOUR PHONE NUMBER!
- Type in your username in the "Account Name:" field. Your
username is the first part of your email address
- Carefully type in your password exactly as it was given
to you by NCKCN. Your password is case-sensitive
- Make sure that the "Save password" option is checked
- Click on the "Apply Now" button
- You can control your modem connection using the utility,
"Internet Connection". This utility is generally found in your
"Applications" folder of your hard drive.
- Double click on the utility "Internet Connect"
- Make sure "Modem Port" is in the "Configuration" drop-down
menu
- Type the local access number that was given to you by NCKCN.
This is NOT your phone number, this is the number your modem must
dial to connect to NCKCN
- Carefully type in your password exactly as it was given
to you by NCKCN. Your password is case-sensitive
- You may check the option "Show modem status in menu bar" if
you would like. It is optional
- Click on the "Connect" button to connect.
- You can drag and drop the "Internet Connect" utility into the
dock if you prefer. This will allow you to have modem control
accessible from your desktop
You should be able to connect and web browse at this point. If you
would like to configure your Mail program please continue.
Mac OS X Mail
Configuration Instructions
- Open the Mail program. You can generally find the Mail program
in the dock.
- The Mail program is a very versitle and useful mail program.
We will not be able to give you support other than what is found
here. Please explore the menus and especially the "Help" menu to
find answers to your questions.
- Select "Preferences..." from the Mail menu
- Make sure that you have the "Account" option selected in the
top toolbar. If you already have a proper account listed like the
one below then click the "Edit" button
- If there are no accounts listed click the "Create Account"
button
- Under the Account Information tab, enter the following
data
- Make sure "POP Account" is chosen for the Account Type
- Type in NCKCN in the "Description:" field
- Enter your email address exactly as it was given to you
by NCKCN in the "Email Address:" field
- Type your full name in the "Full Name:" field
- Enter the incoming mail server pop3.nckcn.com in the
"Host name:" field
- Type your username in the "User name:" field. This is the
first part of your email address
- Carefully type in your password exactly as it was given
to you by NCKCN. Your password is case-sensitive
- Enter the outgoing mail server smtp.nckcn.com in the
"SMTP Host:" field
- 1) Click the "Account Options" tab
- 2) Make sure that the "Delete messages on server after
download" option is checked
- 3) Click on the "OK" button to save your changes
That's it. You should now be able to send and receive email from
NCKCN.
